The world of crypto scams is evolving fast – and the latest weapon of choice for fraudsters is deepfake technology. Powered by generative AI, today’s deepfakes can create disturbingly realistic videos that are almost impossible to distinguish from reality. These systems even use self-learning algorithms that constantly test and refine their ability to fool detection tools. And here’s the scary part – software to make these fakes can be bought on the dark web from as little as $20.
The consequences are staggering. Deloitte’s Center for Financial Services predicts that generative AI–driven fraud could cause US$40 billion in losses in the United States alone by 2027. Much of this will stem from scams that weaponize trust – with bad actors frequently exploiting the credibility of figures like Elon Musk.
Musk’s global reputation in technology and cryptocurrency makes him the perfect target for scammers looking to cash in on his credibility. In recent months, deepfake videos of Elon Musk have circulated widely across platforms like YouTube and X, showing him “endorsing” fake crypto giveaways and investment platforms. In September last year, several YouTube channels livestreamed a fabricated “Musk” discussing the U.S. presidential debate – a front for crypto scams that lured viewers into fraudulent websites. With over 30,000 live viewers, many were tricked into ‘investing’ in schemes that promised to double their money, only to lose funds or have personal information stolen.
Deepfake scams blur the line between truth and deception in terrifying new ways. As detection systems struggle to keep up with self-learning AI, vigilance becomes the only defence. Always verify the source of any crypto promotion – even if it looks and sounds convincing. In the age of generative AI, you can no longer trust your eyes.
