In the mid-2010s, a woman who styled herself as the ‘Crypto Queen’ rose to prominence on stages across Europe, presenting herself as a visionary who would reshape the financial system. Her name was Ruja Ignatova, and the project she promoted, OneCoin, was marketed as a revolutionary alternative to Bitcoin that promised easy wealth and financial freedom to anyone willing to believe in it.
The reality was far less glamorous. OneCoin was not a genuine cryptocurrency, despite how it was presented to the public. The technology behind it could not be independently verified, and users were required to place trust in a closed system controlled entirely by those running the scheme. Rather than functioning as a decentralised network, OneCoin depended on constant recruitment and internal accounting, creating the illusion of value where none truly existed.
Millions of people around the world invested in OneCoin, many of them ordinary individuals with limited financial experience who were drawn in by persuasive marketing and the fear of missing out. By the time authorities began to intervene, the scale of the fraud was already immense, with losses estimated in the billions of dollars. Entire communities were financially damaged, while those at the top continued to portray themselves as innovators at the forefront of a new economy.
In 2017, as scrutiny increased, Ignatova disappeared after boarding a flight from Sofia to Athens. She has not been seen since and remains missing today, despite later being placed on the FBI’s Most Wanted list. Although other figures connected to OneCoin have since been prosecuted, the central figure behind the scheme has never been held to account.
The damage caused by OneCoin goes beyond financial loss. It helped fuel lasting distrust in cryptocurrency more broadly, reinforcing the belief that the space is driven more by hype than substance. Even legitimate blockchain projects continue to feel the effects of that legacy, making OneCoin a cautionary story that still shapes how crypto is perceived today.
